Improving Safety and Security of
Government Facilities for Employees and Visitors

INTRODUCTION

All aspects of the business of our provincial government are continually being reviewed and assessed, including safety and security. Are the provisions we have appropriate? Are they what we need? Are they in line with other jurisdictions and sectors?

The past decade has seen a marked increase in private-sector attention to occupational safety and to issues of workplace well-being. This attitude is becoming part of public sector thinking also, and in recent months we have seen initiatives in workplace wellness and respect.

Governments across the country are working on ways to raise the level of security in our public buildings and facilities, and to enhance the sense of safety among the people who work within them.

In keeping with our level of risk which is deemed to be low compared with international situations, government is moving forward with appropriate plans to improve safety and security in its facilities - particularly the Confederation Complex in St. John’s, which houses the legislative assembly in addition to numerous government offices.

Our aim is to foster a security-sensitive environment, within government facilities and among government employees. This will improve the safety and security of employees, elected representatives and visitors, as well as help ensure the smooth continuation of the day-to-day operations of government and the House of Assembly, the provincial legislature.

Improvements focus on procedures for mail handling, use of identification cards, protocols for ordinary visits and use of government facilities and grounds by third parties. Inside this web site, you will find more information on these topics.

As public employees, we all share a responsibility to achieve a safe and secure environment together, by following basic guidelines and cooperating with standard security procedures.
