Be Paper Wise

The Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Strategy encourages reducing waste, reusing, and recycling waste products. Paper accounts for the highest percentage by weight of waste produced by most office operations. In the interest of reducing paper waste, everyone is encouraged to adopt paper saving practices in their day to day work. It’s the right thing to do. The following are some good ‘Paper Wise’ practices to adopt for reducing paper usage:

  1. Send more documents in electronic data format as e-mails and attachments wherever possible/appropriate instead of paper copies.

  2. Review draft documents thoroughly on screen for necessary changes before sending to printer.

  3. Always print double sided where possible. Most word processing software and some printers support this. If there are any problems with this check with your computer support personnel.

  4. Reduce the number of copies when appropriate. If several people in a work group / division need to be hard copied, allow a single copy to circulate as opposed to multiple copies.

  5. Use paper thoroughly. Save non-confidential single sided copies for draft printing on the other side, or for note/ scribble sheets and pads.

  6. Ensure all waste paper goes to the blue box for recycling.

  7. When photocopying, check all copier settings first to ensure they’re correct. Copy double sided. Convert single sided multiple page documents to double sided. Set photocopier to default to double-sided.

  8. When preparing and placing orders for printing services, use paper space fully, proof documents thoroughly, order the minimum quantity required.

  9. Post this notice on your office bulletin boards.
